We have visited Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground numerous time in our RV but wanted to give tent camping a try! Although my husband has been tent camping many times before, this was our first tent camping trip as a family (outside of backyard campouts!).
We love to stay at "The Fort" because there are so many fun things to do including Chip N' Dale's campfire sign-a-long, outdoor movies, swimming, crafts ($), outdoor games, pony/horse rides, scavenger hunts, multiple playgrounds, special holiday events, etc. The list goes on and on (but that will be for another post). The Fort is also a short boat ride away from Magic Kingdom which is very convenient.
Campsite
There are many different types of campsites at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground although 2 of the loops are designated for Tents/Pop ups (Loop 1500 & 2000). We stayed in site #2058. The site consisted of a gravel area for the tent, concreate parking pad, BBQ grill, picnic table, electrical outlets, cable connection, & water hose. The biggest difference in the Tents/Pop up sites compared to the other campsites is the availability of a sewer connection. We didn't mention the complimentary WIFI to our kids because we didn't want them playing on their tablets all day (lol!), but yes WIFI is available. You can have up to 10 registered guests at each campsite which is nice for those larger families. Disney will assign you a campsite right before you arrive and text/email you the site number. You can have your Disney Vacation Planner request a specific loop or specific site ahead of time if you prefer.
This specific site had great foliage between the other campsites although received full sun/no shade. The site was in walking distance to the bath house which was very convenient.
Bath Houses [AKA "Comfort Stations"]
The Comfort Stations offered toilets, sinks, showers, laundry services ($) and an ice machine ($). Going into it, I was nervous about how I was going to bath our younger kids in the bathhouse but I did not have any problems. The handicapped accessible shower stall offered a hand held shower head and a larger changing area which came in handy when bathing the kiddos. I noticed the Comfort Stations would become crowded a few hours before the parks opened and a few hours after the parks closed. If all the showers were taken at the Comfort Station closes to our site, I would try another comfort station in our loop.
Setting up Camp!
We brought along Clubhouse Vacation's Glamping Tent which slept our family of 5 comfortably. My husband and I slept on cots and my kids slept on air mattresses. We also brought along a portable AC unit for those hot Florida days and a small TV since cable is available (I just love watching all the special Disney channels). Since the Fort offers so many food options, we decided not to cook at our site and instead ate out. We brought along an ice chest to keep drinks and breakfast items cold. Our visit was in mid February and we lucked out with no rain in the forecast with highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s.
Would we do it again?
100% YES! The kids had so much fun and we made memories as a family that will last a lifetime! This was a great first experience and can't wait to do it again.
