Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground truly is one of the most magical campgrounds on earth! It has over 800 campsites, 400 cabins and is spread out over 750 acres.
We have camped at "The Fort" numerous time over the years and it is one of my favorite campgrounds to visit. Below is a list of things you need to know when planning your visit to the Fort....
Types of Campsites
The Fort has various campsite categories including Tent/Pop up, Full Hook up, Preferred, Premium, and Premium Meadows. Each campsite offers electricity, water, cable, Wi-Fi internet and sewer (except for the Tent/Pop up sites which do not offer sewer connections). The best way to distinguish the campsite categories would be the location of the campsite within the campground and size of the site.
Below is how I would explain the difference:
Preferred Campsite: Closes to the back of the campground (By the Marina/Beach, Pioneer Hall/Dining, Settlement Trading Post) . Includes a place for a tent & RV. (Loops 100, 200, 300)
Premium Meadow Campsites: Closes to the activities (Meadows Pool/Bike Barn/Outdoor Theater/Meadows Trading Post). (Loops 600, 800, 900, 1000, 1400)
Premium Campsites: Sites are larger/Big Rig friendly. (Loops 400, 500, 700, 1100, 1200, 1300)
Full Hook Up Campsites: All the remaining campsites. Includes a place for a tent & RV. (Loops 1600, 1700, 1800, 1900)
Tent or Pop Up Campsites: Campsites that do not offer sewer connections. (Loops 1500, 2000)
*Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground also offers 1 bedroom cabins that include a kitchen.
Disney will assign you a campsite right before you arrive and text/email you the site number. You can have your Disney Vacation Planner request a specific loop or specific site ahead of time if you prefer. If you would like to see pictures of each campsite at Fort Wilderness, search "The Wilderness Princess" or download the app "Fort Wilderness Sites".
The loops have bathhouses (AKA Comfort Stations) with showers, toilets, sinks, laundry facilities ($) and ice machines ($).
Also, you can have up to 8 registered guests at each campsite which is nice for those larger families or multiple families who would like to share a campsite since most campsites allow both a RV & tent.
Site Decorations
Decorating your campsite at The Fort is a thing! Especially during the holidays (Halloween & Christmas) campers go ALL OUT! Numerous campsites will have signs, inflatables, lights, etc. If you don't have the room to pack elaborate decorations, bring along some chalk to decorate your site. Please note that Disney has rules for site decorations, a complete list of the rules can be found on their website.
Getting Around
The Fort is HUGE! The campground offers internal buses to get you from one place to another but I highly recommend renting a golf cart or bringing your bike. When you are coming back from the parks and you are "Disney tired" the last thing you want to do is schlep your stroller on another bus to get back to your campsite. The Fort offers golf cart parking at the marina, bus stops, stores and restaurants.
The golf carts sell out quick, so make sure to reserve one as soon as you make your resort reservation.
Since the majority of the golf carts look the same, a lot of campers will decorate their golf cart. Below are a few examples of some of the decorated golf carts we have seen at the Fort.
Campfires
Disney is very particular on the type of firepits allowed at the Fort. If you don't want to purchase a new firepit or don't have the room to pack one, make sure to join the Facebook Group "Fort Wilderness Wondering Firepit". There are various "approved" firepits that roam the campground and you can check the FB group to find when they are available to scoop up. The only rule is you must pass it along to another campsite before departing.
There is a nightly campfire put on by Disney that everyone is welcome to attend. This is great option if you don't want to bother with a fire at your campsite.
Schedule of Events "Recreation Activities"
If you are not a member of a Fort Wilderness Facebook Group, make sure to join one. At the beginning of each month, Disney will provide a schedule of events for the entire month and people will post pictures of the schedule on the Facebook group. It is helpful to see the schedule ahead of your visit to know the activities available.
Things to Do
There are so many fun things to do at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground! I highly recommend planning at least 1 if not more "resort" days so you can enjoy the many activities. Some enjoy visiting The Fort without stepping foot in the parks.
Swimming- There are 2 different pool areas; the Meadows Swimmin' Pool and the Wilderness Swimmin' Pool.
Tri-Circle-D Ranch: Go visit the horse stables, kids shorter than 48 inches can ride a pony ($) in the stable and kids 9 years and older can go on a horseback ride ($) in the corral at the front of the campground.
Chip N Dales Campfire Sign-a-long- Play games with Chip N Dale, sing-a-long to their favorite songs and then enjoy a warm campfire. Don't forget to bring the supplies for s'mores!
Movie Under the Stars- Each night of your stay a different movie will play at the Campfire Theater. Check out the recreation activity schedule for the list of movies.
Scavenger Hunt: The campers have organized their own scavenger hunt around the Fort. If you would like to participate, join the Facebook Group "Original Fort Wilderness Scavenger Hunts". Download/print out the required labels and bring small treasures to hide. All you need to do is post a picture of the item and give a clue where it is located. My kids have so much fun participating in this scavenger hunt!
"Looping"- Since so many campers decorate their sites, it is fun to drive around the loops to check out the different decorations. And lets be honest, it also fun to check out everyone else's RV/camping set up.
Watch the Magic Kingdom Fireworks- At night, head on over to the marina/beach area to watch the Magic Kingdom fireworks show.
Watch the Electrical Water Pageant- You can also watch the electrical water pageant show from the marina/beach area.
Outdoor Games- Borrow basketballs, tennis equipment or shuffleboard equipment from the Bike Barn.
Crafts- ($) Various crafts are offered at the Bike Barn throughout the day. Our favorite activities have been the Mickey Tie Dye and Design Your Own Tumbler. These make great souvenirs for the kids!
Gem Mining- ($) Purchase a bag of special dirt from the Bike Barn and then make your way over to the Assay Station to see what treasurers you uncover.
Playground- There are multiple playgrounds to enjoy around the campground!
Bike Barn Rentals- You can rent bikes, canoes, kayaks or fishing gear ($).
Visit the Marina- Rent a boat or go on a fishing excursion ($).
Go Shopping- Stop by the Meadow Trading Post and/or Settlement Trading Post to check out your favorite Disney or Fort merch!
Carriage/Wagon Ride- Take a horse drawn wagon/carriage ride around the Fort ($).
Visit the other resorts- Take the boat from the Fort to Magic Kingdom and then jump on the monorail to visit The Contemporary, The Polynesian, Grand Floridian or take the boat to Wilderness Lodge.
Arcade- ($)
Archery- ($)
Segway Tours- ($)
Dining Options
Crockett's Tavern- If you need a cold drink after setting up your campsite, visit Crockett's Tavern!
Food Truck Round Up- Various Food Trucks may visit the Fort on select evenings.
Trail's End Restaurant- We love placing mobile orders here! Highly recommend the Family Meals which is very similar to the food served at Hoop- Dee-Do! (My favorite is the cornbread!).
Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue- Classic dinner show with great homestyle food!
Meadows Snack Bar- Grab a bite to eat around the swimming pool.
Meal Delivery- If you would like to have a meal delivered to the Fort, you will need to meet the delivery driver at the Reception Outpost/Lobby.
Grocery Delivery- If you wanted to make the meals yourself, you can have groceries delivered to the Fort. Once your groceries arrive you can either pick them up from luggage assistance or request to have them delivered for a $6 fee. (If alcohol is included in the grocery order, you must meet the delivery driver at the time of delivery.)
Nearby Resort- We love visiting the nearby resorts to grab a bite to eat. Take the boat from the Fort to Magic Kingdom and then jump on the monorail to visit The Contemporary (Chef Mickeys), The Polynesian (Dole Whip, 'Ohana, Trader Sams), Grand Floridian (Grand Floridian Café) or take the boat to Wilderness Lodge (Geyser Point, Whispering Canyon Café, Roaring Fork).
Transportation to the Parks
One of the perks of staying on property is being able to use the Disney Transportation. At the front of the Campground, you can hop on a bus to either Disney Springs, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, or Epcot.
When traveling to Magic Kingdom, you have 2 options. Either head to the marina and take the boat which drops you off right in front of Magic Kingdom or you can take a bus which is located near the back of the campground/Pioneer Hall.
Transportation starts 1 hour before parks open/early entry.
