Our first experience camping as a family was when we rented a RV during a trip to Tennessee. The campground we were staying at was offering a full weekend of Halloween themed activities including trick or treating, costume contests, dance parties, candy bingo, etc. We had the best time and we knew these were the type of memories we wanted to make with our kids. It wasn't soon after that we purchased our very own RV. 8 years later, our annual Halloween themed camping weekend is still one of our family's favorite camping trips of the year!
Many campgrounds offer Halloween themed activities nearly every weekend during the month of October. Here are a few of the things we have done over the years to help make our Halloween themed camping weekend extra special!
Campers go ALL OUT decorating their campsite for the Halloween themed weekends. It is so much fun to walk around the campground, checking out the different decorations. Many campgrounds offer site decorating contests. We bring along a few Halloween themed inflatables and lights to decorate our campsite.
We not only put up a few decorations on the outside of the camper, but I also decorate the inside. I bring along a few Halloween themed removeable window decals, tape pumpkin or bat cutouts to the wall or hang a Halloween themed banner or two. The kids love to help decorate!
If you are looking for some quick and easy Halloween decorations, make sure to check out Oriental Trading, they have the cutest Peanuts Great Pumpkin décor!
Make sure to check the campground’s schedule of events before your visit. Many campgrounds will offer various activities and crafts over the weekend.
I bring along a few activities to help entertain the kids. Here is a list of things I have prepared in the past.....
Pumpkin Carving (Don’t forget a candle or light for the inside of the pumpkin)
Painting Pumpkins
Halloween Themed Crafts (I pick up a few from Target, Michaels, or Hobby Lobby)
Coloring Books & Crayons
Movie Night with popcorn & candy
Our kids look forward to picking out their camping costumes. In the past they have been bees, scarecrows, cheerleaders, Sanderson sister, etc. I also love to dress in festive Halloween attire! (Check out this cute Camping themed Halloween shirt!) Many campgrounds even offer costume contests. Campers are so creative and come up with the best costumes!
Don't forget to bring a trick or treat bag/bucket so your kids can collect all the spooky treats!
Speaking of treats! My kids seem to get more candy at the campground than they do on Halloween night in our subdivision. We get asked all the time how much candy campers should bring with them to hand out to the trick or treaters???? It's really up to you!
If we are at a campground with 250 RV sites, I prepare for 200-250 trick or treaters. If I run out, oh well!
I like to offer both candy and non candy treats. Here are a few non candy treat options;
Color Pages with Crayons
Bags of Chips
Temporary Tattoos
Fruit Gummies
*Some campers even bring dog treats to pass out to the little furry friends!*
Safety Tip: If your kids will be walking around the campground at night, make sure they have a flash light. These lights are a great hands free option!
