There are so many different types of Recreational Vehicles on the market that it can get confusing to decide which RV would be best for your style of travel.
Let's break down the types of RVs and share our pros/cons of each.
Tent-
Lets start off by giving a shout out to tents. Yes, it is not a "Recreational Vehicle" but it can still be a great option for camping. It is easy to travel with and the cheapest option.
Pop Up Camper-
Pop up campers are half tent/half recreational vehicle.
The benefits of Pop up Campers;
Small enough to be towed with any vehicle that has a hitch
Small enough to fit into any size campsite
Once you set up your campsite, you still have a tow vehicle to explore the area or drive to the store.
Some of the drawbacks of Pop up Campers;
The walls of the camper are similar to a tent and doesn't block out the outside noise.
The sides of the camper must be totally dry before storage to prevent mildew
Truck Camper-
Truck Campers attach to the truck bed and can easily be removed.
The benefit of Truck Campers;
Small and compact so you can fit into any size campsite and can easily fit in parking lots
Low maintenance (no tires)
Once you set up your campsite, you still have a tow vehicle to explore the area or drive to the store.
Some of the drawbacks of Truck Campers;
Limited space, it may only fit 1-2 people
Can be top heavy
Travel Trailer-
Travel trailers also called "Bumper Pulls" come in various sizes and floorplans and is traditionally the entry level RV.
The benefits of travel trailers;
Depending on the size of the travel trailer, it can fit in most all campsites
Once you set up your campsite, you still have a tow vehicle to explore the area or drive to the store.
Some of the drawbacks of travel trailers;
You need a vehicle equipped to tow the travel trailer which includes a brake controller and a certain size trailer plug in.
A travel trailer may be difficult to maneuver and will take some practice back into a campsite
Fifth Wheel-
The fifth wheel is the largest of the trailers and come with unique floorplans.
The benefits of fifth wheels;
They are known to be the largest of the trailers and have the most space/can fit a large family
Once you set up your campsite, you still have a tow vehicle to explore the area or drive to the store.
Fifth Wheels are known to travel/tow better than travel trailers
Some of the drawbacks of fifth wheels;
A special hitch will need to be installed in the bed of the tow vehicle/truck to be able to tow the 5th wheel and may lose access to store anything in the truck bed.
Length of the campsite matters when reserving a campsite, fifth wheels may not fit into every campsite
Class B-
The Class B is the smallest of the motorized RVs.
The benefits of the Class B;
It is easy to drive
Can be parked anywhere
It can fit in most all campsites
Some of the drawbacks of Class B;
It is small in size and can only fit 2-3 people.
Once you set up your campsite, you will not have a tow vehicle available. You will have an extra step to break everything down when it is time to go explore the area or drive to the store.
Class C-
The Class C is the most popular motorized RV.
The benefits of the Class C;
Easy to drive, similar to driving a truck
Easy to park
Depending on the length, it can fit in most all campsites.
Some of the drawbacks of the Class C;
Once you set up your campsite, you will not have a tow vehicle available. You will have an extra step to break everything down when it is time to go explore the area or drive to the store.
The drive is not as smooth compared to the other motorized RVs
Class A-
The Class A is the largest of the motorized RV.
The benefits of the Class A;
It is the largest and most spacious of the motorized vehicles and can fit a larger family
It is known to have a smoother ride compared to a Class C
Some of the drawbacks of the Class A;
Takes a little practice to drive and park
Length of the campsite matters when reserving a campsite, Class A may not fit into every campsite
Once you set up your campsite, you will not have a tow vehicle available. You will have an extra step to break everything down when it is time to go explore the area or drive to the store. (Many Class A owners will tow a vehicle or rent a car when they get to their destination. )
