My husband and I knew if we wanted to camp inside Yellowstone National Park it would be important to book early! One year in advance we were able to secure a site at Grant Village Campground and started planning our 2 week summer vacation out west. Although, 4 months before we were scheduled to depart we received a heart breaking email that the opening date for Grant Village Campground would be pushed back and our reservation would be canceled.
To our surprise, we learned that Mammoth Campground, a traditionally "first come, first serve" campground, would be opening for advance reservations in the next 2 days. There we were, waiting patiently by our computers to see if we could keep our camping in Yellowstone National Park dreams alive. Then success, we were able to score a campsite; #37 B!
If you asked me what campground has the best view, this one would be it! #1, hands down the best view!

Preparing to "dry" camp without utilities took some pre-planning.
Electricity: You were allowed to use a generator between the hours of 8am-8pm but the majority of that time we were hiking and site seeing. We brought a solar panel, similar to the one linked HERE that helped charge our RV batteries while we were away. It was also cool at night so we didn't have to worry about running the air conditioner.
Water: We filled up our fresh water tank and conserved water as much as we could. Mammoth campground did have water spigots at various locations around the campground that could be used if needed.
Propane: We made sure to have a full propane tank and a back up tank if needed. Propane is essential to ensure hot showers and warm meals.
Meals: We kept cooking to a minimum and used paper plates/cups/utensils to reduce the number of dishes that needed to be cleaned (conserving water). Before the trip, I cooked and froze a lot of food (gumbo, chili, roast beef with gravy, etc.). Since we did not have access to a microwave, I wanted to make sure I could easily heat up the meals on the propane stove/oven. We used this pour over coffee brewer to make coffee in the morning.
Tips:
If you didn't know, there is no cell phone service in the park. We recommend downloading the GyPSy Guide for Yellowstone NP. The app offers guided tours based off of your GPS location/no cell service needed. This was SOOOO helpful!
Try the Huckleberry Ice Cream Sandwiches at the General Stores! You'll thank me later!
